Bengal artisans achieved high degree of skill and
dexterity in producing brass and bell metal articles of different
sorts. Their main line of production was utensils in endless designs
and shapes required for every days use for house hold. The products
of artisans of Khagra of Murshidabad district are very rich in shine
and finish and are noted for their quality and durability. The
specialty of Bankura, Purulia and Ghatal (Midnapur) artisans lies
in their skill in moulding bigger items like kalas etc. Chandanpur (Midnapur)
artisans are noted for their skill in decorative engravings like
head of goods and goddesses. Pai-set better known as Lokepar bowel
or Suri bowel, available in a set of eight and originally used as
measures for rice and paddy are now much in demand for interior
decoration.
[About 5,000 Artisans families of the district like Bankura Birbhum,
Midnapur, Burdwan, Uttar & Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda, Midnapore,
Murshildabad, Nadia are engaged in the crafts.]
