In Bengal kantha is a widely common thing. It is basically pieces of different cloth stitched together to make a bedspread or book cover etc. Kantha is made by stitching pieces of dhotis & surrounding it with the borders. It has embroidery designs from some pieces or folk legends. The designs have an outline & are filled up with different colours. The pattern has a central group the lotus is very famous for this. The kantha has its typical look which is particular of Bengal. Babnan in the district of Hooghly has for long been a traditional centre of the chikkon embroidery. The attraction of this form of craft lie in the wonderful combination of colourful base cloth and thread. Chikkon embroidery comes in many forms, such as cut works, shadow work etc.
