Handicrafts is an expression of the creative spirit in material form and stands for human endeavor to infuse an element of grace, beauty and elegance to an otherwise drab and harsh human life. Handicraft artisans working in villages, towns and Semi-urban areas are the creators of innumerable varieties of handicrafts. Development and promotion of Handicrafts is a must for income generation of the existing artisans as well as for creation of employment opportunities for new generation.

State Government has all along been with the artisans for their development. In this small book, attempts have been made to highlight the handicrafts of West Bengal so that it receives due patronage and inspiration from all concerned. List of crafts persons selected in the Districts and State Level Handicrafts Competition 1998-99 for receiving awards has also been incorporated in the present volume to give honour to their respective creation.
