HORN CRAFTS

The use of animal horn for various ornamental and decorative purposes is perhaps as old as civilisation itself. During the last two world wars, the craftsman of Baishnabchak area of Midnapur district did a flourishing business in horn combs. In post-war period, horn combs began to lose ground in the market because of appearance of cheaper plastic combs. To overcome the crisis, State Government introduced different measures for diversification and to day the craftsmen are engaged in production of wide range of horn products like walking sticks, pen stands, napkin rings, spoons, knobs and handles etc.

[About 2,000 Artisans in the villages of Baishnabchak and Joleghanshyan of Midnapur district are engaged in horn Handicrafts.]
