Roads
The state's Public Works Department
(Building and Roads) has been at work since 1854 constructing
and maintaining roads, bridges and buildings. Its aim
is to achieve high standards of construction at the most
economical cost and it is quick to adapt new methods toward
this end. Road construction in Punjab is mechanised. Hot
mix plants, paver finishers and tandem vibratory rollers
have replaced manual methods and are in line with the
latest road construction and maintenance practices worldwide.
Similarly, bridge construction methods have been brought
at par with the latest technology by using strands pre
stressing and other technology. This has resulted in quicker,
better and more economical execution to civil works.

the most vital segment of the state highway network. The
combined length of these roads is 7305 kms. Some of these
roads owing to their importance are being elevated to
the status of National Highways. These are few of those:

Chandigarh-Patiala-Sangrur-Barnala-Bhatinda Road
Kharar-Ludhiana-Moga-Ferozepur Road

Link Roads
One of the major reasons for tremendous development in
agriculture has been these link roads to all villages
of Punjab. These all weather black top road has been used
by the enterprising farmers of Punjab carry their farm
inputs to their villages and transporting the grain back
to the market to feed the country. The state has constructed
31,657 kms of link roads and these are a very expensive
state asset. Maintaining these roads have always been
a challenge for the state and Punjab has been able to
do this job very well. Punjab is the only state in the
country where even link roads are given renewal coat with
premix carpet. This premix carpet is laid with the help
of hot mix plant, paver finisher and other machinery avoiding
manual processes to a very great extent. This gives better
quality, quicker progress and smoother roads which in
turn reduce vehicle operating cost.
