STONE CARVING

The beautiful stone images unearthed in different parts of the State, specially those of Pal period, speak highly of the degree of attainment of the Bengal craftsman. Stone were largely used in temples and palaces and the artisans devoted their talents in craving exquisite images of Gods and Goddesses on them. The villages Dainhat and Patun in Katwa sub-division of Burdwan district achieved a distinction for making stone images in the 16th /17th Century. The traditional craftsmen, living in these villages, had supplied many beautiful images, which are still being worshipped in temples and houses in different places. A few descendants of the old masters are still engaged in the craft. Stone Carving Artisans of Susunia of Bankura district have now come up with varieties of craved products in addition to their traditional stone utensils.
[107 Artisans’ families concentrated in the district of Bankura, Midnapur, Burdwan and Malda are engaged in the craft.]
